Limos on Show
As the Republican National Convention gets ready to get underway in St. Paul, another event – CivicFest is taking place across the river. CivicFest is a non-partisan look at the history of the Presidency, democracy and Minnesota. There are 35 museum-quality exhibits to check out while you're at the Minneapolis Convention Centre.
There is a variety of displays. You can see everything from a full-scale replica of Air Force One to a miniature version of the White House; even learn a little bit about the life and administrations of each of the 20th century presidents and take a peek at a real presidential limousine. Or, if fashion is more your speed, you can check out the gowns worn by several first ladies.
Presidents, whether they have been Republicans or Democrats all had one common feature; they all opted to travel in a luxury vehicle. The early horse drawn vehicles used by American Presidents were retired in 1928 to make way for the automobile. Iconic brands like Cadillac and Ford’s Lincoln dominate the type of cars that have been selected for the job of carrying the most powerful man on earth; although there have been a few Chrysler Imperials along the way as well.
As the cars were custom built and bullet proof they even accompanied the some Presidents on their overseas visits to other countries. Some of these cars even became almost an icon of the incumbent President, with people associating the president with his limousine. The limousine is usually the centrepiece of the motorcade and is the first thing people see. Presidents come and go, no matter how much of a celebrity or how famous they may have become, but their limos remain; they are a nostalgic link to a bygone era.
These days you don’t have to be a president to travel in a luxury stretched limousine. And, hiring a limo is not as expensive you may think.
